Current ActionsHelp protect communities from dirty tar sands oil! Experts believe that if the Canadian Tar Sands are fully developed to service growing oil demand, we cannot win the fight to prevent catastrophic climate change. Dirty tar sands crude oil generates three times the greenhouse gases as conventional oil -- and it keeps Americans addicted to fossil fuels that harm landowners, communities, drinking water, and all who hope for a clean and secure energy future. One key piece of this expansion is TransCanada's proposed new pipeline - the Keystone XL. Before heading to the Gulf Coast, the Keystone XL is proposed to carry tar sands crude to the U.S. through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. On November 4th, the State Department gave the public only 30 days to comment on this federal action and they never stated that a public comment period even existed. Unless the US State Department grants a comment extension for this project, impacted landowners and the public only have two days left to comment on this proposal, which could eventually result in eminent domain proceedings against the landowners. Tell the US State Department not to rush dirty tar sands infrastructure projects, tell them to start fresh and reissue the public notice for the the Keystone XL pipeline with a full 90 day comment period for this federal action. Help drag a 19th century law into the 21st century Thanks to the thousands of you who sent letters in to their Representatives, on November 1, 2007, the House of Representatives passed the Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act (HR 2262). This past spring, the Senate Energy Committee is writing a mining reform bill of its own. If passed, the Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act will change the way that mining occurs on public lands and is a giant step toward bringing mining on public lands into the 21st century. Urge your Senator to support REAL mining reform Sign the No Dirty Energy Pledge Sign the No Dirty Energy pledge today and demand that the energy industry clean up its act! Recycle your cell phone from home Cell phones contain toxic metals that can pollute the environment and threaten human health. You can recycle your phone from home for free and support EARTHWORKS at the same time! Protect the Grand Canyon from Uranium Mining The Bush Administration is attempting to undermine Congress' conservation efforts around the Grand Canyon. They want to eliminate a rule that gives the House Natural Resources Committee the authority to withdraw a million acres around the Grand Canyon and other treasured resources from potentially devastating uranium mining. You can write Secretary of the Interior Kempthorne to oppose the Bush Administration's undermining of Congress and environmental abuses. |
